Stronger Together: The Story Behind BCC

If you’ve ever sat in a meeting and realized three different groups are working toward the same goal — but not talking to each other — you understand why the Better Communities Coalition exists.

Morgan County is filled with people who care deeply about housing, mental health, childcare, transportation, and economic opportunity. For years, good work has been happening across our county. What was missing wasn’t passion — it was connection.

That’s where BCC comes in.

We serve as the hub, connecting six volunteer-led task forces — our spokes — so their work strengthens one another instead of happening in isolation. We help align strategy, share resources, reduce duplication, and amplify progress.

Because housing impacts workforce.
Childcare impacts economic development.
Transportation impacts access to jobs and care.
Mental health impacts everything.

When we zoom out, we see the bigger picture.

What That Looks Like in Action

Right now across Morgan County:

Long-Term Affordable Housing
Leaders are advancing development efforts to increase sustainable housing options.

Short-Term / Emergency Housing
Partners are pursuing funding and partnerships to expand emergency and transitional solutions.

Mental Health
Community leaders are implementing priority strategies, strengthening school and employer partnerships, and coordinating funding opportunities.

Childcare
Partners are building leadership capacity and aligning with employers and educators to improve access and strengthen early learning foundations.

Transportation
Advocates are mapping mobility solutions and expanding access to better connect residents to jobs, services, and essential resources.

Business & Economic Development
Leaders are investing in youth workforce pathways, advancing initiatives like the Martinsville Innovation Career Lab, and exploring entrepreneurship and incubator supports to strengthen our local economy.

Individually, these efforts matter.
Together, they become transformative.

Why the Hub Matters

BCC does not replace the work of our task forces — we strengthen it.

We provide central coordination and visibility.
We host leadership alignment meetings.
We offer shared tools and communication support.
We track cross-collaboration.
We amplify wins.
We connect the dots.

And when the dots connect, momentum builds.

Looking Ahead

As we move through 2026, our focus is on strengthening our foundation — including completing our 501(c)(3) process to ensure long-term sustainability and expanded funding opportunities.

This fall, we will host our 2026 Annual BCC Summit — bringing together community leaders, partners, and residents to share progress, celebrate collaboration, and outline next steps for the year ahead.

Morgan County does not lack leadership. It does not lack heart.
What we are building is alignment.

And alignment changes everything.
